There is nothing more satisfying in life than watching strangers unselfishly go above and beyond the call of duty. It all began one wednesday morning before my friend Jeff's PhD General Exam. I needed to bring some good food to one of my best friend's presentation, and I only had 20 minutes so I made a quick stop at QFC. I asked the kind girl cutting beets where I could find a nice platter of fruit. In almost any circumstance I would never buy such a tray that I could make 10 times better myself but desperate times call for desperate measures. She hesitated at first, explaining there was a limited selection and the fruit was nothing to write home about. We walked over to the minimal, watery fruit tray and I was not impressed, nor would this suffice to bring for my friends.
As I looked hesitantly, she offered me an alternative. "Why don't you select out the fresh fruit you want and I'll give you a tray to serve it on." She also told me I would pay the same price but get a much better value. After I agreed, we walked over to fresh fruit. As I began to select the colorful assortment, she turned and said "On second thought, pick out what you'd like and I'll cut it and present it on the tray for you." Really? I thought. Unbelievable! I'm definitely game.

We grabbed a box of strawberries, a whole pineapple, freshly cut tropical fruit and some garnishes. She had me wait while she went to the back to create her masterpiece. After spotting her running around the store, I was intrigued. When she came back 5 minutes late, she carried in her hands, a beautiful tray of fruit and a smile on her face. Her facial expression let me know how proud she was to make this beautiful array. I couldn't thank her enough and the total came out to $14...a steal. The love and care she put into her tray made the fruit taste even better. If you're ever in need of a lovely fruit tray and don't have time to make it yourself, go to QFC in Queen Anne and ask them to prep it for you.
