Chicken Masala Dosa @ Chili's Deli & Mart, U District

On my fourth visit to this restaurant, I decided it was time to give it some "street cred." One of my Indian friends, Rajesh, introduced me to this unassuming joint in the U District sometime last year. This small little eatery run by a husband and wife has a decor resembling your old high school's  cafeteria, but don't be fooled, the food will speak for itself. Sitting away from the door, you will get to enjoy a musical Bollywood film in case your company is no longer entertaining. The menu is full but simple with typical Indian dishes, but I can assure you, the dosa are the wife's specialty. For those unfamiliar, a dosa is similar to a crepe made of rice batter and black lentils and a staple in southern Indian cooking.

Before the dosa, we were treated with a tasty lentil soup to wet our palettes. When the dosa came to our table, I knew I would probably be skipping dinner that night. A cross between a Mexican burrito and a French crepe, the dosa arrived in full form nearly hanging off either end of the plate. The outer crust was warm, fried and soft. The dosa was complemented with two additional sauces on the plate; a yogurt of sort and a spicier green sauce. The only way to eat this beast was with a fork and knife. I cut it open, took a picture then began to devour. The inerts were rich with flavor, the chicken and everything that accompanied it was delicious. If you like Indian food, adore masala and want to eat your weight in dosa, you should check out Chili's in U District on 55th and University. Khush ho kar khao!

  1. Awesome place!

We had two dosas, can't remember the names, but one was chicken and the other was vegetarian masala. Delicious soup too. Thank for the tip!

*One minor correction on your post, Chili's is located on 50th. It took a bit to find it (i don't ask for directions) and google maps doesn't have an entry for them.
